Two formulations, prepared for lasting comfort

Urals Ayurveda compounds classical herbs into focused care for the two concerns we see most — swollen, tired veins in the legs, and stiff, aching joints. Medicines and oils are prescribed after consultation.

Varicose Veins Care
Sira Granthi

Varicose Veins Care

Restore flow. Ease heaviness. Renovate without surgery.

A vein-focused protocol for Sira Granthi — twisted, pooled vessels that ache after long standing. Herbs and local oils work to pacify Vata, support Rakta Dhatu, and reduce congestion so legs feel lighter and knots are less angry. Used alongside elevation, walking breaks, and clinic therapies such as Raktamokshana when your physician advises them.

  • For visible twisted veins, evening heaviness, and ankle swelling
  • Supports circulation and vein wall comfort without cutting or lasers
  • Pairs with Pathya — elevation, warm food, and compression as advised

Joint Care
Sandhivata

Joint Care

Warm the joints. Quiet Vata. Move with less strain.

Joint stiffness, crepitus, and pain that worsen in cold or after rest are classic Sandhivata — Vata lodged in the sandhi. This care line uses internal medicines and external oils to nourish the joint, ease dryness, and support mobility in knees, hips, spine, and smaller joints. Protocols are tailored to stage — from early morning stiffness to long-standing arthritis — always without rushing to surgery.

  • For knee, hip, spine, and generalised joint ache or stiffness
  • Internal herbs plus local Sneha (oils) to reduce dryness and catch
  • Supports daily movement; constipation and cold, dry food are addressed as Apathya

Sira Granthi

What Ayurveda calls varicose veins — and why waiting can make them worse

In Ayurveda, Sira Granthi — also known as Siraja Granthi — refers directly to varicose veins. Sira means vein, and Granthi means a knot-like swelling. Modern medicine describes the same condition: bulging, enlarged superficial veins — most often in the legs, where standing and walking raise pressure in the lower body. For some people veins are mainly cosmetic; for others they bring aching, swelling, and skin changes. What starts as heaviness can progress into pain, ulcers, and harder recovery if left untreated.

Modern medicine

How varicose veins develop

Arteries carry blood from the heart to the body; veins return it. Leg veins must work against gravity. Muscles in the calf act as pumps, and tiny valves in the vein walls open to let blood flow toward the heart, then close to stop backward flow. When those valves weaken or are damaged, blood pools in the vein — stretching and twisting it. Ayurveda describes the same mechanism through aggravated Vata disturbing Rakta Dhatu in the Sira (vein) network.

Sushruta Samhita

In a weak person, exertion vitiates Vata, which seizes the vein network, constricts, compresses, and dries it, quickly forming a raised round knot. Siraja Granthi is difficult to treat if it is painful and mobile.

Signs and symptoms

Varicose veins may cause no pain at all. Spider veins — a smaller, milder form — sit closer to the skin and can look like a web on the legs or face.

What you may see

  • Veins that are dark purple, blue, or close to your skin tone
  • Twisted, bulging veins that look like cords on the legs
  • Spider veins — fine web-like vessels, often on the legs or face

What you may feel

  • An achy or heavy feeling in the legs
  • Burning, throbbing, muscle cramping, or swelling in the lower legs
  • Worse discomfort after sitting or standing for a long time
  • Itching around one or more veins
  • Skin colour changes near a varicose vein

How it happens

According to the Sushruta Samhita, Sira Granthi is triggered by specific lifestyle errors that strain the legs and disturb circulation.

01

The cause

Over-exertion, heavy lifting, or standing for too long strains the legs.

02

Dosha imbalance

This strain severely aggravates Vata Dosha — the energy of movement — and vitiates Rakta Dhatu, the blood tissue.

03

The mechanism

Aggravated Vata enters the veins and causes Sankochana (constriction), Vakreekarana (tortuosity or twisting), and Vishoshana (drying of the vein walls).

04

The result

The veins lose elasticity — Sira Sathilya. Blood pools, forming painful or painless non-pulsating blue knots.

Key symptoms of Sira Granthi

Stage 01

Early signs

Heavy legs, mild swelling (Shotha), and dull aching pain (Shoola) that worsens after long standing. Easy to overlook — but the ideal stage to begin care.

Stage 02

Physical changes

Visible, snake-like twisted veins (Vakreetala) that do not throb or pulsate.

Stage 03

Advanced signs

Severe skin discoloration — dark blue or blackish spots — extreme dryness, numbness, and hard, immovable vein lumps.

Stage 04

Complications

If ignored, Sira Granthi can lead to Siraja Vrana — venous ulcers that are slower to heal and need more intensive care.

Who is more at risk?

Family history and excess weight are among the strongest risk factors. Ayurvedic texts also link Sira Granthi to over-exertion, heavy lifting, and long hours on your feet.

Family history

If close relatives have varicose veins, your risk is higher.

Age

Wear on vein valves over time allows some blood to flow backward and collect.

Sex

Women are more often affected — hormonal shifts during menstruation, pregnancy, or menopause, and some hormone treatments, can relax vein walls.

Pregnancy

Increased blood volume supports the growing baby but can enlarge leg veins.

Obesity

Extra weight puts added pressure on veins in the legs.

Prolonged sitting or standing

Movement helps blood return from the lower body — stillness works against it.

Possible complications

Serious complications are uncommon, but worth knowing — especially if symptoms change suddenly.

Venous ulcers

Painful sores can form near varicose veins, often around the ankles. A discoloured patch of skin may appear before an ulcer opens.

Blood clots

Deeper leg veins can enlarge and cause ongoing pain and swelling. Seek help promptly for persistent leg pain or swelling.

Bleeding

Veins close to the skin can burst, usually causing minor bleeding — but it still needs medical attention.

Chronic leg swelling

Long-standing varicose veins can lead to persistent swelling in the legs.

Prevention and daily care

Better blood flow and muscle tone can lower the risk of varicose veins and ease discomfort. In Ayurveda, Pathya-Apathya — what to follow and what to avoid — is as important as medicines in Sira Granthi care.

What to do (Pathya)

  • Elevate your legs when sitting or lying down — including on a pillow while sleeping.
  • Wear supportive compression stockings as advised.
  • Exercise regularly and take walking breaks if you sit or stand for long hours.
  • Maintain a healthy weight and eat a high-fiber, low-salt diet.
  • Eat warm, fresh, and easily digestible cooked food.
  • Change how you sit or stand often throughout the day.

What to avoid (Apathya)

  • High heels and tight stockings, except medical compression wear.
  • Prolonged sitting or standing without movement.
  • Stale, dry, or excessively cold foods.
  • Violent or sudden heavy leg exercises.
  • Straining during bowel movements — treat constipation promptly.

How soon should you seek treatment?

Varicose veins rarely improve on their own. Early consultation and timely Ayurvedic medicines and therapy can slow progression and ease symptoms — waiting often means more pain and longer recovery.

Seek care soon if you notice

  • New or spreading twisted veins on the legs
  • Heaviness, burning, or aching that worsens by evening
  • Ankle swelling that returns daily
  • Itching or skin colour changes near the veins

Seek care urgently if you have

  • Sudden severe leg pain or rapid swelling
  • A vein that bleeds and is hard to stop
  • An open wound or ulcer near varicose veins
  • Warmth, redness, or fever with leg symptoms
Why Ayurveda

Why Ayurvedic care is a strong choice for varicose veins

Surgery is not the only path. Ayurveda aims to pacify Vata, purify Rakta Dhatu, and restore blood flow — treating Sira Granthi as a circulation and tissue imbalance rather than only a structural vein problem.

Non-surgical by design

Classical therapies and herbal formulations work with your body’s circulation — aligned with our promise: we renovate without surgery.

Root-cause thinking

Care addresses aggravated Vata, impure Rakta, stagnant blood flow, and lifestyle factors — not only the appearance of the veins.

Personalised protocols

B.A.M.S. physicians tailor medicines and therapies to your stage, constitution, and daily routine — from early veins to advanced discomfort.

Whole-leg wellness

Support for swelling, heaviness, skin health, and related conditions (diabetes, wounds, cardiac care) under one Ayurvedic roof.

Para-surgical procedures

When clinically appropriate, classical para-surgical methods are highly effective for relieving congestion in Sira Granthi — always after a physician’s assessment.

Bloodletting

Raktamokshana

Highly valued for immediate pressure relief by releasing stagnant, impure blood.

Venesection

Siravyadha

A precise piercing of the vein to drain stagnant, impure blood and reduce congestion.

Leech therapy

Jalaukavacharana

Medicinal leeches applied directly to the knots. Their saliva thins the blood and reduces swelling.

Modern medicine and Ayurveda, side by side

Both recognise the same swollen, twisted veins in the legs — they differ in how they explain the cause and how they restore comfort.

Root cause

Modern medicine

Faulty vein valves; backward blood pool

Ayurveda

Aggravated Vata and impure Rakta Dhatu

Main target

Modern medicine

Varicose veins & Ayurveda — answers patients ask

Clear guidance on causes, timing of treatment, and when non-surgical Ayurvedic care may help.

Sira Granthi — also called Siraja Granthi — is the Ayurvedic name for varicose veins. Sira means vein and Granthi means a knot-like swelling. Acharya Sushruta described twisted, swollen vessels that clump together like knots.

Weak or damaged vein valves let blood flow backward and pool in the legs, stretching and twisting the vein. Ayurveda describes the same picture as aggravated Vata entering the veins and vitiating Rakta Dhatu. Family history, obesity, pregnancy, hormonal changes, ageing, and long periods of sitting or standing all raise risk.

Spider veins are a smaller, milder form of varicose veins. They sit closer to the skin and often look like a fine web on the legs or face. Varicose veins are larger, twisted, and bulging — and more likely to cause aching, heaviness, swelling, and skin changes.

Regular exercise, healthy weight, leg elevation, compression stockings when advised, a high-fiber low-salt diet, and avoiding long stretches of sitting or standing all help. Ayurvedic Pathya care adds warm digestible meals, walking breaks, and avoiding strain and constipation. These habits support circulation whether veins are early or already visible.

Mild symptoms may ease with rest and elevation, but the underlying vein weakness usually does not reverse on its own. Timely care helps prevent progression.

When prescribed by qualified Ayurvedic doctors after examination, herbal medicines and therapies are designed to be gentle on the body while supporting circulation. Always follow your consulting physician’s guidance.

Not always. Many people seek non-surgical Ayurvedic care first — especially in early and moderate stages. Urals Ayurveda specialises in renovating vein health without surgery wherever clinically appropriate.

When clinically appropriate, Urals Ayurveda may use para-surgical procedures such as Raktamokshana (bloodletting), Siravyadha (venesection), and Jalaukavacharana (leech therapy) to relieve congestion. These are never first-line for every patient — they follow a doctor’s examination.

As soon as veins become visible, painful, or swollen — after a proper consultation. Starting early often means simpler protocols and better comfort. Urgent symptoms (bleeding, ulcers, sudden severe pain) need immediate medical attention.
